Introduction to Egyptian Papyrus Paintings

Probably the oldest form of writing material that was ever developed in Egypt, popularly known as papyrus. It was manufactured by laying two sheets of papyrus with one sheet placed on right angle with the other one. The two sheets were stuck together with the adhesive material and were pressed to make sure that the sheets joined well. To make them smooth they were rubbed against a stone or a shell. These were generally made having a length of 10 meters. Completely recyclable, no use of chemicals and usable were a few features of quality papyrus. Much of the Egyptian population survived on the production of papyrus. These were quite costly and were replaced by the Chinese paper in the AD 105.

The Egyptians never disclosed the process of manufacturing papyrus. It was only in the 1940’s that the secret was revealed by the archaeologists.
